for improvisation

Increasingly improvisation is a central component in my creative work. As anyone who has heard or participated in good improvisitory music knows, there is a certian musical energy that is quite unique to this form of expression. I have found myself captivated by this energy and drawn to participate in free improvisation as a performer, but also as strange as it may sound, as a composer.

Composing for improvisors is a unique challenge. What do you compose? On what elements do you try to impose your compositonal schemes and what parts do you leave free? How can the music be both composed and improvised? I find these conundrums quite satisfying to wrestle with, and hopefully in the process some interesting music gets shaken loose.
